Ndume Commends Tinubu for Decision to Suspend Cybersecurity Levy
In response to widespread public criticism regarding the proposed cybersecurity levy, Senator Ali Ndume, Senate Chief Whip, has commended President Bola Tinubu for his swift action in pausing its implementation.
The cybersecurity levy, which was set to be imposed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), faced backlash from various quarters for its potential impact on the financial burden of Nigerians. Senator Ndume praised President Tinubu for listening to the concerns of the people and taking steps to reassess the situation.
“It’s good that the president has now acted and we’ll go back to the drawing table to look at the Act again,” Senator Ndume stated. He emphasized the importance of addressing cybercrime in Nigeria, highlighting its detrimental effects on the country’s reputation and security. However, he acknowledged that the implementation of the levy was rushed and required further scrutiny.
Senator Ndume emphasized that while combating cybercrime is crucial, it should not place undue financial burdens on the Nigerian populace. He urged Nigerians to recognize the government’s commitment to addressing cybercrime while ensuring that the welfare of citizens, particularly low-income earners, is protected.
“I still want to commend the President for that,” Senator Ndume affirmed, “but I also want to urge Nigerians to agree with this government that this cybercrime issue, the laws need to be critically upgraded.”

The decision to suspend the cybersecurity levy reflects the government’s responsiveness to public feedback and its commitment to striking a balance between security measures and economic considerations. As discussions continue, stakeholders are hopeful for a revised approach that addresses cybersecurity challenges without imposing undue financial burdens on the citizens.
