24 Senators in 10th National Assembly Yet to Introduce Any Bills in One Year

Abuja, Nigeria — June 10, 2024 — As the 10th National Assembly approaches its one-year anniversary since inauguration, it has been revealed that 24 out of the 109 senators have not introduced any bills during this period. The Senate, inaugurated on June 13, 2023, has seen the remaining 85 senators sponsor at least one bill each.

An assessment of legislative activities indicates that a total of 279 bills were introduced in the upper chamber between July 13, 2023, and March 2024. Among the 13 ex-governors in the Senate, nine actively proposed bills within this timeframe.

Senate

Prominent among those proposing multiple bills are:

  • Orji Uzor Kalu: 5 bills
  • Senate President Godswill Akpabio: 2 bills
  • Senator Gbenga Daniel: 4 bills
  • Senator Dankwambo: 3 bills
  • Aminu Tambuwal: 1 bill
  • Sani Bello: 3 bills
  • Danjuma Goje: 2 bills
  • Wammako: 2 bills
  • Adamu Aliero: 1 bill

In contrast, former governors Adams Oshiomhole, Henry Seriake Dickson, Simon Lalong, and Abdulaziz Yari have not introduced any bills. Former Senator Umahi sponsored one bill before his departure, while Senator Geidam did not sponsor any.

The 24 senators, excluding the four former governors, who have not yet sponsored any bills include:

  • Chukwu Chizoba (LP, Enugu East)
  • Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central)
  • Khabeeb Mustapha (PDP, Jigawa South West)
  • Kaila Samaila Dahuwa (PDP, Bauchi North)
  • Rufai Hanga (NNPP, Kano Central)
  • Abdulaziz Yar’Adua (APC, Katsina Central)
  • Mohammed Dandutse Muntari (APC, Katsina South)

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) leads with the highest number of bills, totaling 23, many originating from the Executive Arm of government. Following him are:

  • Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North): 17 bills
  • Sani Musa (APC, Niger East): 8 bills
  • Olamilekan Adeola (APC, Ogun West): 7 bills
  • Patrick Ndubueze (APC, Imo North): 7 bills
  • Saliu Mustapha (APC, Kwara Central): 7 bills
  • Sunday Karimi (APC, Kogi West): 6 bills
  • Adetokunboh Abiru (APC, Lagos East): 6 bills
  • Senator Tony Nwoye (LP, Anambra North): 6 bills
  • Kaka Shehu Lawan (APC, Borno Central): 6 bills
  • Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South): 5 bills
  • Suleiman Sadiq (APC, Kwara North): 5 bills
  • Jimoh Ibrahim (APC, Ondo South): 5 bills
  • Hussein Babangida Uba (APC, Jigawa North-West): 5 bills
  • Asuquo Ekpenyong (APC, Cross River South): 5 bills
  • Abbas Aminu Iya (PDP, Adamawa Central): 5 bills

Several senators have introduced four bills each, while others have put forward three. The performance of these senators is a testament to their legislative engagement and commitment to addressing various national issues through legislative processes.
