HRH Aminu Ado Bayero Wins Case Against Kano State Government

Kano, Nigeria — June 13, 2024 — In a landmark ruling, the Kano State High Court has ordered the Kano State government to pay N10 million in damages to His Royal Highness Aminu Ado Bayero. The court found that the state government breached Bayero’s fundamental rights, personal liberty, and freedom of movement following the governor’s directive to arrest him without lawful justification.

The court’s decision came after a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding Bayero’s arrest. The judge ruled that the arrest, carried out under the directive of the Kano State Governor, violated Bayero’s rights enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

In his ruling, the judge emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting the fundamental rights of every citizen, regardless of their status. He condemned the arbitrary use of power by the state government and stressed that such actions could not be justified in a democratic society.

“The arbitrary arrest of HRH Aminu Ado Bayero was a clear violation of his personal liberty and freedom of movement. The state government had no lawful justification for their actions, which were a direct breach of his fundamental rights,” the judge stated. “This court directs the Kano State government to pay the sum of N10 million to Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as compensation for the breach of his rights.”

HRH Aminu Ado Bayero expressed relief and gratitude following the court’s decision, reiterating his commitment to justice and the rule of law. He called on the government to respect the rights of all individuals and avoid future incidents of unlawful detention and harassment.

The Kano State government has yet to respond to the ruling or indicate whether it plans to appeal the decision. This case highlights the ongoing struggle for human rights and legal accountability in Nigeria, setting a significant precedent for similar cases in the future.

This verdict not only reaffirms the importance of judicial oversight in governance but also serves as a reminder to government officials about the consequences of overstepping their legal boundaries.
