Demolition of Illegal Shanties and Kiosks Begins Along Lekki-Ajah Expressway

Date: July 1, 2024

Today, the Monitoring and Compliance team of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (@Lawma_gov), in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (@LAGESCOfficial), commenced the demolition of illegal shanties and kiosks in Sangotedo, Lakowe, Awoyaya, and other locations along the Lekki-Ajah expressway.

This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to maintain public safety, reduce environmental hazards, and ensure a cleaner and more organized community. The removal of these illegal structures is seen as crucial in preventing unsanitary living conditions, curbing the spread of epidemics, and creating a safer, more conducive environment for residents.

The demolition activities, which began early this morning, aim to clear the expressway of makeshift shelters and unauthorized kiosks that have contributed to traffic congestion and environmental degradation. Officials involved in the operation emphasized the importance of adhering to urban planning regulations and maintaining public spaces for the benefit of all.

A representative from @Lawma_gov stated, “By removing these illegal structures, we are addressing public health concerns, preventing the spread of diseases, and ensuring that our communities are safe and clean. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the quality of life for all residents in the affected areas.”

The @LAGESCOfficial also highlighted the importance of community cooperation in sustaining these efforts. Residents and business owners were urged to comply with regulations and support the government’s initiatives aimed at improving public safety and environmental health.

The demolition exercise is set to be a continuous effort, with plans to extend the operation to other parts of Lagos State in the coming weeks. Authorities have assured that adequate measures will be taken to provide alternative arrangements for those displaced by the demolition, ensuring that the welfare of affected individuals is considered.

Residents and commuters along the Lekki-Ajah expressway have expressed mixed reactions to the demolition. While some praised the government’s efforts to restore order and cleanliness, others raised concerns about the impact on livelihoods and the need for more comprehensive urban planning solutions.

As the demolition exercise progresses, the Lagos State government reaffirms its commitment to creating a sustainable and livable environment for all its citizens, emphasizing that the cooperation of all stakeholders is essential to achieving these goals.
