MAIDUGURI, BORNO STATE — (17 November 2025)

The Federal Government has announced plans to establish a comprehensive national database for farmers, capturing key details such as farm size, location, and type of cultivation in order to enhance identification and traceability of agricultural produce across the country.

This major initiative was disclosed in Maiduguri, Borno State, by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari. According to the Minister, the new system will be developed in partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), ensuring that each registered farmer is uniquely identifiable and that government interventions reach the intended beneficiaries.

Abubakar Kyari explained that the registry will serve as a crucial window for the ministry to verify and assess farmers eligible for support programs. By having accurate data, the government hopes to eliminate duplication, reduce fraud, and improve the effectiveness of agricultural assistance.
As part of efforts to strengthen the sector, the Ministry also distributed farming equipment to smallholder farmers, vulnerable groups, and farmers’ associations across Borno State. The support package includes tools and inputs designed to reduce the cost of production and enhance efficiency on the farms.

The Minister emphasized that these interventions are aimed at boosting overall productivity and empowering farmers to contribute more significantly to national food security. He added that the government remains committed to modernizing agriculture through technology, data-driven planning, and targeted support.
