NAFDAC Strategises On Eliminating Trans-Fatty Acids; Launches Roadmap

Lagos, Nigeria — October 6, 2025

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has officially launched its Strategy and Roadmap for Trans-Fatty Acid (TFA) Regulation in Nigeria, reinforcing the country’s commitment to safeguarding public health by eliminating a significant dietary risk associated with heart disease, stroke, and premature death.

At the launch event, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized Nigeria’s proactive stance, noting that the country has already taken bold regulatory measures by limiting industrially produced trans fats to no more than 2 grams per 100 grams of total fat or oil. This initiative earned Nigeria recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2023 as one of only seven countries worldwide to adopt best-practice policies for eliminating TFAs.
The newly unveiled roadmap adopts a phased and comprehensive approach that prioritizes industry reformulation, laboratory capacity building, compliance monitoring, public education, and collaboration across sectors. NAFDAC has expanded its laboratory capabilities to analyze trans fats, a significant stride toward full program implementation. This progress is supported by key partners, including Resolve to Save Lives, WHO, and other stakeholders.

Prof. Adeyeye urged all relevant parties—government agencies, the food industry, civil society, and consumers—to unite in the effort to achieve WHO validation for Nigeria’s TFA elimination program. She stressed, “Eliminating industrially produced trans fats is possible, achievable, and urgent. With this roadmap, Nigeria is determined to protect the health of its citizens and secure a food supply free from the dangers of trans-fatty acids.”

This initiative marks a critical step in Nigeria’s journey toward improving public health outcomes and aligns with global efforts to eradicate harmful dietary fats from the food supply.
