Speaking like an elegant woman means knowing how to speak eloquently and carefully watch how you say things, what you say in different circumstances and also why you say it. Speaking elegantly can sometimes be very hard, especially when it comes to building up and improving your vocabulary as well as putting those improvements into action. It’s even harder when you are not a native English speaker and English is not your primary language. However, There are many tricks and tips you can learn to train you on how to speak elegantly.

DON’T RAISE YOUR VOICE WHILE SPEAKING

I know we  sometimes find it hard to keep our voice down while speaking, especially during an argument or when we are out having fun with friends, but if you raise your voice or shout while speaking, you will no longer be portraying your image of Elegance. Speaking loudly is crass, tacky,  and it is not ladylike at all. Raising your voice gives listeners the impression that you are not well trained, you don’t have good manners and you are not classy and you don’t want to give that impression at all.

SPEAK IN A MEASURED TONE

Speaking in a measured tone is not something you just achieve in a day. It takes time and practice to master and it involves not speaking too loudly or too softly or even in a monotone way. It is also important to pace yourself when speaking to give emphasis to what you are saying and keep listeners engaged.

AVOID USING FILLERS LIKE UM, AH, LIKE

Filler words such as, you know, hmm, um, Makes you not structured in your approach within your conversation and they can diminish your overall credibility in a conversation, impacting others perception of you. Train yourself to stop using these words. Instead, take a brief pause to gather your thoughts before you continue speaking. You don’t have to speak so fast, speaking fast does not mean you are eloquent, take your time to speak and this will help to improve your train of thought and your words will come out fluently.

AVOID THE USE OF SLANGS

On your journey to becoming elegant, you need to strive to be sophisticated. Slang words are not classy and the use of slang words is not something you do in formal settings so why should you do it in other situations? You should also avoid using foul language in public settings, an elegant woman would never swear within the earshot of others so if you decide to speak elegantly, then refrain from engaging in inappropriate dialogue at all costs.

DON’T SPEAK TOO MUCH

Good communication is about being able to discern when you are speaking too much, look at your listeners reaction and don’t just continue to rant on for  minutes on end. In addition, speaking less really adds to your mystique, it keeps people intrigued by you and also keeps people wanting more.

AVOID INTERRUPTING OTHERS

Interrupting a person when they are talking is absolutely bad Manners. When you interrupt, it conveys to the person that you don’t really care about what he or she is saying. Let the person finish speaking before you interject, it will leave such a lasting impression on the person. There is nothing worse than being that woman who is known for interrupting. If the person that you are conversing with is ranting on excessively, don’t show the person that you are bored.  If you absolutely have to leave, then jump in when there is a slight break in the conversation.

MAINTAIN EYE CONTACT BUT DON’T STARE BIZARRELY

Visual Cues communicate a lot so even when your mouth stops moving, the way you behave and the way you look at the person in front of you communicate a lot. When you maintain natural eye contact, this really puts the person that you are speaking to at ease and this signals to other people around you that you are very much focused on the person in front of you. On the other hand it is very bad manners to stare obsessively at the person so momentarily break eye contact with the person without looking bored.
