Abuja, January 21, 2026
The Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival has formally commenced, with the launch of its pre-event activities in Abuja, marking the build-up to one of Nigeria’s most iconic cultural celebrations.
An Open Day programme, being aired live on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), kicked off at the NTA Arena in Abuja. The event features colourful cultural dances, speeches, press briefings and the display of branded vehicles to showcase planned motor rally activities associated with the festival.
Cultural troupes from Kebbi State and other participating states are slated to perform, while a number of prominent personalities are expected to grace the occasion. Leading the Kebbi State Government delegation is the Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Abubakar, alongside ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, traditional rulers and other invited guests who are present for the launch of the national sensitisation programme.
Speaking to journalists, the Kebbi State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK, explained that the pre-event programme is a long-standing tradition of the festival, held ahead of every edition. He noted that the NTA has consistently remained a critical partner, providing the historic Argungu Fishing Festival with sustained support and cooperation over the years.
According to the commissioner, the hosting of the Open Day ceremony in Abuja effectively signals the official kick-off of activities for the 2026 edition. He added that visitations and engagements with stakeholders at all levels will continue nationwide to keep the festival in the public spotlight as preparations intensify.
