FG Highlights Education Reforms at UNILAG 56th Convocation

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Nigeria’s education sector as a critical driver of national renewal, innovation, and sustainable development during the 56th Convocation Ceremony of the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
Speaking on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, CON, emphasized that education remains central to the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, describing it as the foundation for economic growth, social progress, and global competitiveness.
Dr. Alausa outlined key Federal Government interventions aimed at strengthening tertiary education across the country. He disclosed that a total of ₦161.9 billion has been disbursed through the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to expand access to higher education for Nigerian students. He also highlighted significant investments in university infrastructure, including upgraded medical schools, student hostels, and simulation laboratories, alongside enhanced support from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
The Minister further drew attention to the Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Business Incubation Certification (EIBIC) programme, which is designed to equip students with practical skills, foster entrepreneurship, and bridge the gap between academic learning and industry needs.
Addressing graduating students, Dr. Alausa urged them to embrace innovation, integrity, and service, describing them as key agents of nation-building. He stressed the importance of artificial intelligence (AI), digital literacy, and emerging technologies, noting that the Federal Government plans to upgrade 46 innovation and technology hubs nationwide by 2026 to support research, creativity, and skills development.
He concluded by reaffirming the government’s resolve to partner with universities, the private sector, and development stakeholders to ensure Nigeria’s education system produces globally competitive graduates capable of driving economic transformation.
