Alaafin of Oyo Begins 21-Day Traditional Rites Ahead of Coronation

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba AbdulAkeem Owoade, has officially commenced the 21-day traditional rites known as “Oro Opebi,” marking a significant step toward his formal ascension to the throne. The announcement was made by the Chief of Staff to the Kabiyesi, Mr. Rotimi Osuntola, in a statement shared with reporters in Ibadan on Friday, March 7, 2025.

The rites, which began on March 7, will conclude on Saturday, March 29, 2025. During this period, Oba Owoade will observe a state of absolute seclusion, adhering to the sacred traditions of the Oyo Kingdom. The statement emphasized the importance of the rites, describing them as a crucial precursor to the Alaafin’s coronation.

“The Aláàfin of Oyo Kingdom hereby announces the commencement of ÒRÒ ÌPÊBÍ, a crucial tradition that precedes His Imperial Majesty’s ascension to the esteemed throne,” the statement read.

Curfew and Restrictions

To ensure the sanctity of the rites, a curfew will be enforced in Oyo township from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day. Movement will be restricted during these hours, and anyone found violating the curfew will face arrest and detention until 7 a.m. the following morning.

The statement further explained, “It is essential to understand that ORO IPÊBI entails the incoming Aláàfin entering a state of absolute seclusion, a sacred tradition that must be honored by all.”
