ASUU Joins NLC in Nationwide Strike Over Minimum Wage and Electricity Tariff Issues
Abuja, Nigeria – June 3, 2024
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially joined the nationwide strike led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). This decision comes as a response to the government’s failure to finalize the renegotiation of the minimum wage for Nigerian workers and the recent hike in electricity tariffs.

In a directive issued to branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators on Monday, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke instructed university lecturers across the country to participate in the strike action.
“The NLC has declared an indefinite strike action beginning from Monday, 3rd June 2024, as a result of the failure of Government to conclude the renegotiation of minimum wage for Nigerian workers and reversal of hike in electricity tariff,” Osodeke stated in the communication.
“Our branches are hereby enjoined to join in the strike action as an affiliate member of Congress. Consequently, branch chairpersons are to mobilize all members to participate in the strike action. Yours in the struggle.”
The inclusion of ASUU in the strike adds significant weight to the ongoing industrial action, which has already caused widespread disruption across the country. Key sectors, including power and transportation, have been severely affected, with a nationwide blackout following the intentional shutdown of the national grid by electricity workers.
Passengers at domestic terminals, such as Lagos Airport, are currently stranded due to the suspension of all flight operations, and healthcare services have been impacted by the participation of nurses and midwives in the strike.
As the strike continues, the public is advised to prepare for further disruptions. The unified stance of labor groups, including ASUU, underscores the urgency of addressing workers’ demands for better wages and working conditions.
Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves and efforts to resolve the crisis continue.
