ASUU STRIKE: FG DIRECTS VICE CHANCELLORS OF ALL FEDERAL UNIVERSITIES TO ENFORCE ‘NO WORK, NO PAY’ POLICY
Abuja, Nigeria – October 14, 2025
The Federal Government has directed the Vice Chancellors of all federal universities across the country to implement the “No Work, No Pay” policy following the recent strike action declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized that the directive is in line with the provisions of extant labour laws. He stated that all federal universities must strictly comply with the policy and ensure that employees who fail to perform their duties during the strike period do not receive salaries.
The statement further instructed university authorities to conduct daily roll calls of staff, with monitoring oversight by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Reports detailing participation in the strike are to be compiled and submitted to ensure that only non-participating staff members are paid. Members of the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), who did not join the strike, are exempted from the salary withholding measures.
Dr. Alausa reiterated the Federal Government’s stance on promoting dialogue as the preferred mechanism for resolving disputes within the education sector. He urged ASUU to return to the negotiation table in the interest of students and the nation’s educational system.
“The Federal Government remains committed to the development and stability of our tertiary institutions. We call on ASUU to embrace dialogue and discontinue actions that further disrupt the academic calendar,” the Minister added.
The ASUU strike, which began earlier this week, is rooted in long-standing grievances over funding, conditions of service, and implementation of past agreements. As tensions escalate, the government’s enforcement of the “No Work, No Pay” rule marks a significant development in the ongoing dispute.
