ASUU strike in Nigeria

Incessant ASUU strikes: Implications on educational development, Nigerian youth and possible solutions.

ASUU has been known to always embark on strike almost every year and currently (19th of August 2022), they are on strike. The effect of these incessant strikes has severe implications on the educational development and the daily life of a Nigerian youth.
Implications of the incessant ASUU strikes on educational development
-Poor academic performance; The reoccurring ASUU strike has made some students to relent in their academic pursuit with a slang that says ‘school na scam’. These individuals nursing these thought, would have no other option than to pay less attention to their studies thereby getting low grades in school. This is however affecting the educational development of the country as many students seem to have lost interest in education.
-Loss of interest in program continuation; Let’s look at it this way, as the ASUU strike is on now, many are already learning a trade or working in a place, these set of individuals will definitely not have the interest to continue their program when the strike is called off because some are already making money with what they are doing, so they see no reason going back to school. Implications of the incessant ASUU strikes on Nigerian youths -Increase in crime rate; As the strike is on, there are many students who are idle, that is, they arent learning any skill and they also aren`t working in anywhere, all they just do is to sit at home from morning till night without doing something productive. Now these set of people will definitely become bored of staying at home and so evil thoughts would begin to flood their minds and make them start thinking of criminal acts to commit for them to survive. Some turning to kidnappers, some doing rituals, some becoming yahoo gang members and so many evils we can think of in our society.
-Mental health issues; Being idle often come with a lot of territories, like boredom and sometimes, this leads to mental health issues like depression and anxiety.
Possible solutions
There are different reasons organizations embark on strikes, ASUU embarked on strike in February 2022 to press home their demands which include but are not limited to; adequate funding for revitalization of public universities, payment of earned academic allowances, university transparency accountability solution, promotion arrears, renegotiation of 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement and the integrated payroll and personnel information system payment. These needs can be summed up into four major categories, namely; increase in salary and welfare packages, improve on infrastructure facilities, adequate funding of public universities and university autonomy. If these four major needs are met, this would definitely be a good solution to the incessant ASUU strike.
