BLUE ECONOMY: FG IS COMMITTED TO COASTLINE INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT
Abuja, Nigeria — November 6, 2025
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing coastline infrastructural development as part of ongoing efforts to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s marine and blue economy.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, made this known in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the South South Development Commission (SSDC) led by its Managing Director, Usoro Akpabio.
Oyetola described the South-South region as a central pillar in Nigeria’s maritime and blue economy aspirations, citing its long coastline, strategic seaports, and abundant aquatic resources as key assets for national growth.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Bolaji Akinola, the Minister emphasized the Federal Government’s dedication to driving maritime infrastructural development across the region. He noted that such investments are critical to ensuring that the South-South plays its rightful role in the nation’s economic transformation.
“The South-South region holds immense potential in Nigeria’s blue economy roadmap. We are committed to providing the necessary infrastructure and partnerships that will enable the region to thrive as a maritime and economic hub,” Oyetola stated.
He further revealed that while the Ministry is collaborating with state governments in the region to develop new deep seaports, existing ports would soon undergo modernization and upgrades under the Federal Government’s Port Modernisation Programme.
In his remarks, Usoro Akpabio, Managing Director of the SSDC, commended Minister Oyetola for his leadership and strategic focus in repositioning Nigeria’s maritime sector. He expressed the Commission’s readiness to partner with the Ministry in implementing blue economy projects aimed at driving economic growth, enhancing regional integration, and improving livelihoods across the South-South.
“We see the Ministry’s initiatives as aligned with our vision for sustainable development in the region. Together, we can build a stronger maritime economy that benefits local communities and contributes significantly to national prosperity,” Akpabio said.
The meeting underscored the Federal Government’s broader agenda to leverage the blue economy for inclusive growth, job creation, and environmental sustainability — particularly in Nigeria’s coastal regions.
