BREAKING: New Salary Bill for Judicial Officers to Boost Judicial Independence and Integrity

Abuja, June 3, 2024 — In a significant move towards enhancing the remuneration of judicial officers in Nigeria, a new salary bill awaiting the President’s assent promises substantial salary increases for top judicial officials. The bill, if signed into law, will set the Chief Justice of Nigeria’s annual salary at N64 million.

The President of the Court of Appeal is slated to receive an annual salary of N62.4 million, while Justices of the Supreme Court will earn N61.4 million each. Additionally, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, and the President of the National Industrial Court will each receive an annual basic salary of N7.9 million.

During a public hearing on the bill, lawmakers and stakeholders alike expressed strong support for its passage. Borno lawmaker, who championed the bill, emphasized the necessity of the salary increase given the current economic climate and high inflation rates in Nigeria.

“The proposed legislation is apt and timely as the increase in remuneration of judicial office holders is long overdue in the light of the present economic realities and high inflation in the country,” he said.

He further explained that the bill, once enacted, would significantly enhance judicial independence and integrity by providing judicial officers with adequate compensation. This, in turn, would allow them to focus on their professional duties without financial concerns, thereby improving their professionalism and decision-making abilities.

“Fair compensation for judicial officers is crucial for maintaining public trust in the judiciary’s impartiality and integrity. When Judges are adequately compensated, it demonstrates a commitment by society towards the important role they play in upholding justice,” the lawmaker added.

The bill’s passage is seen as a crucial step towards ensuring that Nigeria’s judiciary remains independent and can operate without undue influence, thereby reinforcing the rule of law in the country. The President’s assent to the bill is highly anticipated, with widespread expectation that it will fortify the integrity and efficiency of the judicial system.
