The Nigerian delegation included the CBN Deputy Governor (Economic Policy), Dr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi, alongside other senior officials. The meeting formed part of the ongoing statutory engagements under the framework of the (ECOWAS) and its specialized monetary and financial institutions.
Specifically, the Committee of Governors Meeting was convened as a continuation of the joint statutory meetings involving the (WAMA), (WAMI), and (WAIFEM).
The high-level gathering brought together representatives from ECOWAS member states and key regional institutions to deliberate further on the proposed single currency for West Africa. Discussions focused on macroeconomic convergence criteria, monetary policy coordination, financial system stability, and institutional preparedness required to advance the region’s monetary integration agenda.
Governor Cardoso reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional economic cooperation and monetary stability, emphasizing the importance of sustained policy coordination, fiscal discipline, and structural reforms among member states. He noted that achieving a viable single currency would require strong macroeconomic fundamentals, enhanced cross-border collaboration, and continued institutional strengthening across the sub-region.
The meeting also reviewed progress reports from WAMA, WAMI, and WAIFEM on compliance with convergence benchmarks, capacity-building initiatives, and technical preparations aimed at facilitating the eventual launch of the regional currency.
The Committee of Governors Meeting concluded with renewed resolve among member central banks to intensify collaboration and accelerate efforts toward achieving the long-standing objective of monetary integration in West Africa.
