The House of Representatives has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring effective oversight of budgetary allocations geared towards the empowerment of women across Nigeria.

Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs, Hon. Kafilat Ogbara, made this pledge during an oversight visit to the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development in Abuja. The visit was part of the committee’s legislative mandate to monitor the implementation and impact of government-funded programmes targeted at women’s development.

Hon. Ogbara emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in the utilization of funds designated for women empowerment. She noted that the National Assembly would continue to play its role in ensuring that such funds are not only properly disbursed but also used effectively to generate tangible and positive outcomes for Nigerian women.
“It is a critical component of our legislative responsibilities to ensure that the funds allocated for women’s development translate into real benefits. We are not just here to approve budgets; we are here to make sure they work for the people,” she said.

The lawmakers underscored the strategic role of the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development, describing it as a key institution in shaping a brighter and more inclusive future for women in Nigeria.
They urged the centre’s management to remain committed to its mission, highlighting the need for improved collaboration with stakeholders to enhance programme delivery and expand reach, particularly in rural communities.

The oversight visit signals the House Committee’s resolve to drive impactful legislative interventions and hold implementing agencies accountable, as part of broader efforts to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment in Nigeria.
