COP30: Nigeria, California Sign MOU to Strengthen Cooperation on Climate, Environment, and Trade

Nigeria and the U.S. State of California have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to deepen collaboration on climate action, environmental protection, and trade during the ongoing 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Belém, Brazil.
The agreement was signed on behalf of Nigeria by Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi, Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), and representatives of the Government of California. The MOU underscores a shared commitment to addressing the global climate crisis through innovative, inclusive, and sustainable partnerships.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr. Majekodunmi emphasized that the partnership will advance the protection and restoration of the natural environment, reduce carbon emissions, and promote sustainable trade and transportation between Nigeria and California. He noted that the collaboration aligns with Nigeria’s national climate agenda and reinforces the country’s leadership role in global climate diplomacy.
The cooperation is expected to foster knowledge exchange, technology transfer, and capacity building in key areas such as renewable energy, clean transportation, circular economy initiatives, and carbon market development.
California’s delegation expressed optimism about the partnership, highlighting that the state and Nigeria share common goals in tackling climate change, improving air quality
The signing of the MOU at COP30 marks a significant milestone in subnational and international cooperation, reflecting the growing recognition that climate action and sustainable trade are essential drivers of resilient and inclusive economic development.
