Coup in Benin Fails
Cotonou, Benin — 9th December 2025
An attempted coup against President Patrice Talon’s democratic government collapsed on Sunday after mutineers in military uniform failed to gain control of key state institutions in the Republic of Benin.
According to reports, the group first attempted to enter President Talon’s residence but was unsuccessful. Following the failed entry, the mutineers moved to seize the National Television headquarters, where they attempted to broadcast their intentions.
The latest updates from Cotonou indicate that the National Guard swiftly intervened, surrounding the television station and taking charge of the situation. Security forces have since established a perimeter around the building to prevent further escalation.
Local outlet 24 Hours in Benin reports that negotiations are currently underway with the mutineers, who remain holed up inside the station as discussions continue.
Authorities have not yet released details on the identities or motives of the mutineers, but officials emphasize that the government remains firmly in control and that calm is being restored across the capital.
More information is expected as the situation develops.
