Dangote Refinery Denies NNPC Lifting of Petrol, Refutes Reports on Pricing

Lagos, Nigeria – The Dangote Group has officially refuted claims that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has begun lifting refined petrol from its refinery, following a misleading headline published by BusinessDay on September 4, 2024. The article alleged that NNPC had started lifting petrol from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and was selling it at N897 per litre.

In a press release issued by the Group’s Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Anthony Chiejina, the Dangote Group clarified that no such transaction has taken place between the refinery and NNPC. The statement confirmed that the contract between Dangote Refinery and NNPC for lifting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) has not yet been finalized, and therefore, the claim about the pricing of petrol is unfounded.

Chiejina emphasized, “The issue of fixing the price of petrol lifted from our refinery does not arise, as we are yet to finalize our contract with NNPC.” He added that the PMS market is strictly regulated by the relevant government authorities, and neither Dangote Refinery nor any other marketer has the power to set prices independently.

The company urged the public to disregard the misleading headline, assuring Nigerians that high-quality petroleum products would be available nationwide once the refinery commences full operations. The statement reaffirmed Dangote’s commitment to maintaining transparency in its operations and providing top-tier products to the Nigerian market.

This clarification comes as the nation continues to monitor developments in the oil sector, especially with the anticipated large-scale production from the Dangote Refinery.
