Edo State Government Terminates 10 Road Contracts, Approves New Projects

The Edo State Government has terminated 10 road contracts as part of efforts to ensure uniformity of standards, avoid overlapping, and expedite project completion. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paul Ohonbamu, following the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Benin City.

Ohonbamu explained that the terminated contracts would be reassessed to determine the extent of work completed by the contractors, with payments made accordingly. He emphasized that the termination was not punitive but aimed at ensuring efficiency and quality in infrastructure development.

Reassessment and Payment of Contractors
“This is to defray what they have done and any other payment accruable. The government is not terminating them with punishment. But the quantum of work will be analyzed, and what they deserve will be paid,” Ohonbamu stated.

He added that the government would also pay 10 contractors from the previous administration for work completed, ensuring no delays in project execution. This move demonstrates the administration’s commitment to fairness and accountability in handling contractual obligations.

Approval of New Projects
In addition to the terminations, the State Executive Council approved several new contracts, including the reconstruction of roads in Ovia North East, Esan North East, and Oredo Local Government Areas. These projects are part of the government’s broader strategy to improve infrastructure and boost economic development across the state.

The council also approved the renovation of dilapidated public schools, aligning with the government’s commitment to providing a conducive learning environment for students. Ohonbamu highlighted the deplorable state of school infrastructure inherited by the Governor Monday Okpebholo-led administration and the steps taken to address the issue.

Governor Okpebholo’s Infrastructure Drive
Ohonbamu praised Governor Okpebholo’s efforts in laying a solid foundation for sustainable infrastructure and human capital development within his first four months in office.

“In four months, the governor has been able to put in place a solid foundation to build upon sustainable infrastructure and human capital development of the people of Edo State,” he said.

The commissioner reiterated the administration’s focus on improving the quality of life for Edo residents through strategic investments in infrastructure and education.

Implications for Edo State
The termination of the 10 road contracts and the approval of new projects reflect the government’s commitment to transparency, efficiency, and quality in infrastructure development. By reassessing and paying contractors for work completed, the administration aims to foster trust and encourage better performance in future projects.

The renovation of public schools underscores the government’s dedication to improving education standards and creating a better learning environment for students. These initiatives are expected to have a positive impact on the state’s socio-economic development, enhancing access to quality education and improving transportation networks.

Next Steps
As the government moves forward with the reassessment of terminated contracts and the implementation of new projects, stakeholders will be closely monitoring progress. The administration’s ability to deliver on its promises will be critical in building public confidence and achieving its development goals.
