EFCC Acknowledges Auction Irregularities, Pledges to Address Complaints

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has acknowledged technical issues during its recent online auction of forfeited vehicles and has committed to reviewing public complaints to ensure transparency and fairness in the process.
Participants reported several challenges, including difficulties accessing auctioneers’ websites, being locked out after submitting bids, and concerns over unusually high bid prices. Some bidders alleged that their winning bids were later invalidated without clear explanations.
In response, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, stated that the commission is awaiting detailed reports from the appointed auctioneers and assured the public that all genuine complaints will be thoroughly reviewed. He emphasized that the EFCC aims to ensure no participant is disadvantaged due to these technical glitches.

The EFCC clarified that while it monitored the auction, direct intervention was limited because the process was managed by accredited auctioneers, in accordance with the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act, 2022, and the Public Procurement Act, 2007. The commission expressed regret over the technical issues, attributing them to poor internet connectivity and an overwhelming number of participants, which hindered the seamless execution of the auction.
The EFCC reiterated its commitment to a transparent and fair auction process and encouraged affected individuals to submit their complaints for review. The commission plans to address these issues to improve future auctions and maintain public trust in its asset disposal procedures.
The commission has urged individuals who participated in the auction and have valid complaints to come forward with detailed information to facilitate a thorough review. The EFCC emphasizes its dedication to conducting its activities in a transparent and accountable manner, ensuring that all stakeholders are treated fairly.
Participants and the general public are encouraged to stay informed about the EFCC’s activities and announcements through official channels to avoid misinformation. The commission remains committed to its mandate of combating economic and financial crimes and ensuring that proceeds of such crimes are managed and disposed of in accordance with the law.
