EFCC Apprehends 26 Suspected Internet Fraudsters in Port Harcourt

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has made a significant breakthrough in its fight against cybercrime with the arrest of 26 suspected internet fraudsters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

According to reports from the Port Harcourt Zonal Command of the EFCC, the arrests were made on May 6 and May 9, 2024, at locations around the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) and Choba axes of Port Harcourt. The operation was carried out based on credible intelligence linking the suspects to various internet-related fraudulent activities.

During the operation, EFCC operatives seized several items believed to be tools used in perpetrating cybercrime, including different brands of smartphones, laptops, and six exotic cars. The recovery of these items underscores the extent of the suspects’ involvement in online fraud schemes.

The suspects, whose identities have not been disclosed, are currently in custody undergoing interrogation by EFCC investigators. Once investigations are concluded, they will be charged to court to face prosecution for their alleged crimes.

The arrest of these individuals is a significant milestone in the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to combat internet fraud and protect unsuspecting members of the public from falling victim to cybercriminals. It also sends a strong message to perpetrators of cybercrime that their illicit activities will not go unpunished.

The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to tackling cybercrime in all its forms and ensuring that those involved in fraudulent activities face the full wrath of the law. The Commission encourages members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious online activities to the appropriate authorities.

As the investigation into this case continues, the EFCC remains steadfast in its resolve to safeguard Nigeria’s cyberspace and uphold the integrity of the country’s financial system.
