EFCC Arrests Syndicate Impersonating Chairman Olukoyede in $1 Million Fraud Scheme

Abuja, August 29, 2024 — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended a four-man syndicate of alleged fraudsters who were impersonating the Commission’s Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, in a $1 million extortion scheme.

The suspects are accused of targeting Mohammed Bello-Koko, the former Managing Director of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), by claiming that he was under investigation by the EFCC for alleged malpractices during his tenure. The fraudsters allegedly told Bello-Koko that Olukoyede was willing to offer him a “soft landing” in exchange for a payment of $1 million, or he would face arrest and prosecution.

Upon receiving intelligence about the scheme, EFCC operatives launched an undercover operation, posing as participants to trap the suspects. The operation led to the successful arrest of all four members of the syndicate. They are currently in the custody of the Commission.

The EFCC has announced that the suspects will face charges in court as soon as the investigation is concluded. This case highlights the ongoing efforts of the Commission to combat fraud and protect the integrity of its leadership and operations.

The EFCC urged the public to remain vigilant against such fraudulent activities and to report any suspicious approaches to the appropriate authorities. The Commission also reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served.
