FCT Department of Child Development Rescues Children from Orphanage Home

Abuja, January 6, 2026

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), through the Department of Child Development under the Women Affairs Secretariat, has intensified efforts to protect vulnerable children with the launch of a rescue and monitoring operation targeting adopted children within the FCT, some of whom were reportedly brought in from Benue State.
The operation, carried out in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and other security and social welfare agencies, led officials to an orphanage located in Kagini, under the Bwari Area Council of the FCT.
According to officials, the intervention followed weeks of discreet investigations by the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, led by the Director of Child Development, Dr. Idris Attah, amid growing concerns over the orphanage’s operations and the welfare of children under its care.

However, upon the arrival of the investigative team at the facility, it was discovered that the proprietress had fled just hours earlier, leaving the orphanage abandoned. Authorities believe her sudden disappearance may be connected to the ongoing investigation and suspected violations of adoption procedures and child protection laws.

Some of the children rescued from the facility have since been identified and placed in protective custody. Officials confirmed that arrangements are underway to ensure their safety, including medical examinations, psychological support, and appropriate welfare interventions.

The FCT Administration has reaffirmed its commitment to the full enforcement of the Child Rights Act and the sanitization of the adoption process within the territory. It warned that individuals or organizations found to be engaging in illegal adoption practices or child exploitation will be made to face the full weight of the law.

Investigations are ongoing as security agencies intensify efforts to locate the fleeing suspect and uncover the full scope of activities carried out at the orphanage.
