Federal Government Approves Salary Increase for Civil Servants

The Federal Government of Nigeria has granted approval for a significant increase in the salaries of civil servants across the nation. The raise, ranging between 25% and 35%, applies to employees operating under six consolidated salary structures.

These structures include the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS), and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS).

It is noteworthy that prior to this decision, enhancements in salary had already been implemented for professionals in the tertiary education and health sectors. This entailed adjustments in salary structures such as the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS), Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS), Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS), Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS), Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), and Consolidated Health Sector Salary Structure (CONHESS).

Emmanuel Njoku, the Head of Press at the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC), confirmed the new salary increments. He stated that the increases are effective from January 1, 2024. Additionally, the Federal Government has sanctioned pension adjustments, with pensioners under the Defined Benefits Scheme set to receive increases ranging from 20% to 28%. This adjustment also comes into effect from January 1, 2024.

The move by the government to improve the remuneration of civil servants underscores its commitment to enhancing the welfare of workers and retirees across various sectors. These adjustments are aimed at addressing the economic challenges faced by civil servants and pensioners, thereby improving their standard of living.

The announcement of these salary increments and pension adjustments is expected to boost morale among civil servants and retirees, ultimately leading to increased productivity and improved living conditions.
