Umuahia, Abia State, February 6, 2026

In line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government, the Abia State Government has received a consignment of livestock vaccines from the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, aimed at strengthening animal health services and boosting livestock productivity across the state.

The vaccines were donated under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) through the National Project Coordinator, Dr. Sanusi Abubakar. Abia State is among seven participating states selected to benefit from the intervention.

Presenting the vaccines to the State Director of Veterinary Services, the Animal Husbandry Assistant (Livestock Productivity), Lukman Alhassan, who represented the National Project Coordinator, explained that the nationwide vaccination exercise forms part of the L-PRES Transboundary Animal Disease Vaccination Programme. He said the programme is designed to prevent and control major livestock diseases, enhance productivity, protect pastoral and farming livelihoods, and promote national food security.

Alhassan emphasized that transboundary animal diseases pose serious threats to livestock production and rural economies, noting that the Federal Government remains committed to supporting states with timely interventions to safeguard the sector.

Receiving the vaccines on behalf of the state, the Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Vitus Nwoko, commended the Federal Government and the L-PRES project for supporting Abia State in the fight against major transboundary animal diseases. He stressed that the Ministry of Agriculture is fully prepared to commence mass vaccination exercises across the state.

Dr. Nwoko assured that the vaccines would be judiciously utilized to protect livestock and improve animal health outcomes in Abia State, adding that the intervention came at a critical time when farmers need support to sustain productivity.

The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) is a Federal Government initiative designed to strengthen animal health systems, improve disease surveillance, and enhance resilience within Nigeria’s livestock sector, in line with national food security and economic growth objectives.
