Federal Government Inaugurates Committee to Review Salary Adjustments Following New Minimum Wage

In a move aimed at implementing the recently enacted National Minimum Wage Act, the Federal Government has inaugurated a 16-member committee tasked with reviewing and negotiating salary adjustments in line with the newly established minimum wage of ₦70,000. The inauguration took place on Thursday, signaling the government’s commitment to ensuring fair wage increases across various sectors.

The committee is chaired by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and consists of equal representation from both the Federal Government and the Trade Union sides. Eight members represent the Federal Government, while the other eight are drawn from various trade unions.

The primary responsibility of the committee is to negotiate and agree on the consequential salary adjustments arising from the new National Minimum Wage Act, which was enacted in 2024. The adjustments are expected to affect various public sector employees, whose salaries will be reviewed in accordance with the new wage floor.

The formation of the committee follows the signing of the minimum wage bill into law earlier this year by President Bola Tinubu, setting the minimum wage at ₦70,000. This move has been widely praised by labor unions and workers across the country, although there have been calls for the swift implementation of salary adjustments to reflect the new standard.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Head of the Civil Service emphasized the importance of the committee’s task, noting that it was a crucial step in ensuring that the wage increase is reflected fairly and equitably across all affected sectors. She urged the committee members to work collaboratively and swiftly to reach a consensus on the adjustments.

The committee is expected to conclude its work within a set timeline and provide recommendations for the necessary adjustments to be implemented across all relevant sectors. The outcome of the negotiations will have a significant impact on the federal workforce and is anticipated to provide much-needed financial relief for public sector employees amid rising inflation and economic challenges.
