FEDERAL GOVERNMENT & WORLD BANK COMMIT $500 MILLION FOR AGRICONNECT IMPLEMENTATION
Abuja, October 31, 2025
The Federal Government of Nigeria and the World Bank have agreed to commit a total of $500 million towards the implementation of the Agriconnect Project, a major initiative aimed at transforming Nigeria’s agricultural sector through digital innovation, improved infrastructure, and enhanced access to markets.
The commitment was disclosed by World Bank officials during a high-level discussion with the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, held in Abuja. According to the World Bank team, the Agriconnect Project is designed to strengthen the country’s agricultural value chains, boost productivity, and promote food security through modern, technology-driven approaches.
Speaking at the meeting, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security commended the World Bank for its continued partnership and support for Nigeria’s agricultural transformation agenda. He noted that the Agriconnect initiative would play a critical role in addressing challenges related to smallholder farmers’ access to finance, climate-smart practices, and digital extension services.
“The Agriconnect Project will empower millions of farmers with the tools and knowledge needed to increase productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and create sustainable livelihoods across the agricultural ecosystem,” the Minister stated.
World Bank officials emphasized that the $500 million commitment underscores the institution’s confidence in Nigeria’s agricultural potential and its importance in ensuring food security across the continent. The project, they explained, would also focus on integrating youth and women into agribusiness through digital inclusion and entrepreneurship support programs.
Implementation of the Agriconnect Project is expected to commence in phases, with priority given to regions that have high agricultural potential but face infrastructural and technological gaps.
The collaboration between the Federal Government and the World Bank marks another significant step toward revitalizing Nigeria’s agriculture sector and positioning it as a driver of economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development.
