FG Approves Major Sports Infrastructure Upgrades Nationwide

Abuja, Nigeria – May 29, 2026

The Federal Government has approved a comprehensive nationwide upgrade of sports infrastructure as part of renewed efforts to reposition the country’s sports sector and promote youth development.
The initiative, announced by the National Sports Commission (NSC), will focus on the rehabilitation, modernization, and construction of sporting facilities across the federation. The upgrades are expected to cover stadiums, training centres, indoor sports halls, and grassroots sporting facilities aimed at nurturing young talents.
According to the Commission, the project forms part of the Federal Government’s broader agenda to revive sports development, encourage grassroots participation, and create opportunities for athletes to compete effectively on both national and international stages.

Officials stated that the infrastructure renewal programme would also enhance Nigeria’s capacity to host major continental and global sporting events while boosting economic activities connected to sports tourism and entertainment.
The NSC noted that several existing facilities have suffered years of neglect, making the intervention necessary to restore them to international standards. The commission added that the upgrades would be carried out in phases to ensure equitable spread across the country.

Stakeholders in the sports sector have welcomed the development, describing it as a major step toward revitalizing Nigeria’s sporting ecosystem and empowering young athletes with modern facilities.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to investing in sports as a tool for national unity, youth engagement, and economic growth.
