FG Inaugurates Committee on Single-Use Plastics Ban

Abuja, Nigeria — November 12, 2025

The Federal Government has inaugurated the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Ban of Single-Use Plastics (SUPs), marking a major stride toward environmental sustainability and comprehensive waste management reform in Nigeria.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, represented by the Permanent Secretary Overseeing the General Services Office (GSO), Mohammed Sanusi Danjuma, stated that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to global environmental standards and sustainable development practices.

According to him, the ban on single-use plastics is a decisive measure to tackle the growing menace of plastic pollution, which poses serious threats to public health, ecosystems, and marine biodiversity.
The newly inaugurated Committee comprises representatives from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) as well as other key stakeholders. Its mandate is to coordinate and oversee the formulation and implementation of policies and strategies aimed at phasing out single-use plastics across the country.

The Committee’s Terms of Reference include investigating the production, use, and disposal of single-use plastics in Nigeria; assessing the environmental and socio-economic implications of the ban; and promoting best practices across the plastic value chain.
The establishment of this Committee underscores Nigeria’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its leadership role in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to responsible consumption and production, climate action, and life below water.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its resolve to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth and effective transition away from single-use plastics toward a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for future generations.
