FG Initiates Measures to Stop Open Grazing in Abuja City Centre
September 21, 2025
In a decisive step towards ending open grazing in Abuja city centre, the Federal Government has embarked on a comprehensive plan aimed at relocating cattle to designated grazing reserves. This move is part of the government’s broader effort to promote peaceful coexistence and sustainable livestock production within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Ministry of Livestock Development recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for the revitalization of the Kawu Grazing Reserve located in the Bwari Area Council of the FCT. The event marked the official commencement of extensive redevelopment works aimed at transforming the reserve into a modern livestock production hub.
Yusuf Jika, reporting from the scene, noted that the initiative is poised to offer a lasting solution to the challenges posed by open grazing. By providing designated grazing areas, the government seeks to curtail conflicts between herders and farmers, which have often led to social unrest and economic disruption.
The revamped Kawu Grazing Reserve will not only serve as a sustainable site for cattle rearing but also stimulate socio-economic development by creating jobs and improving livestock management practices. This initiative aligns with the federal government’s commitment to enforcing the nationwide ban on open grazing, thereby fostering security and harmony within the nation’s capital.
As the project progresses, stakeholders and residents alike remain hopeful that these measures will effectively curb the adverse impacts of open grazing, ensuring a peaceful and prosperous Abuja city centre.
