FG RELEASES 2023 NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL CENSUS REPORT
Abuja, Nigeria — December 4, 2025
The Federal Government has officially released the 2023 National Agricultural Sample Census (NASC) report, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to modernize and strengthen its agricultural data systems.
The census, conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and the World Bank, provides the most comprehensive overview of Nigeria’s agricultural landscape in over three decades.
According to the newly released report, Nigeria recorded approximately 40.2 million agricultural households in 2023, reflecting the central role of agriculture in the nation’s economy and livelihood systems. This extensive enumeration offers critical insights that will guide policy formulation, investment decisions, food security planning, and intervention programmes across the agricultural value chain.
The Federal Government noted that the updated census data will serve as a foundation for evidence-based decision-making, enabling stakeholders to tackle challenges such as low productivity, climate vulnerabilities, and market inefficiencies with accurate and timely information.
The 2023 NASC report is expected to support national initiatives aimed at boosting food production, enhancing rural development, and positioning agriculture as a key driver of inclusive economic growth.
Further details from the census are anticipated to be released in subsequent sectoral breakdowns to help stakeholders better understand the structure and performance of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
