Kuru, Plateau State – November 11, 2025
The quest for gender equity in Nigeria reached a significant milestone with the inauguration of the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Gender Centre of Excellence at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State.
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, while inaugurating the centre, described it as “another bold step towards bringing gender issues to the front burner and dismantling stereotypes against women.” She emphasized that empowering women and promoting gender balance are essential to achieving sustainable national development.
The First Lady commended the management of NIPSS and participants of Senior Executive Course 45, 2023, for conceiving and establishing the centre, noting that its objectives align with Nigeria’s National Gender Policy (2006) and several global frameworks to which the country is committed, including the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to Mrs. Tinubu, the new Centre of Excellence will serve as a hub for research, policy innovation, and capacity building on gender issues, helping to advance inclusive governance and equitable access to opportunities for all Nigerians.
To support the immediate takeoff of the centre, the First Lady announced a donation of ₦250 million, promising further assistance from both public and private sectors to ensure the sustainability of the initiative.
She reaffirmed her administration’s dedication to creating enabling environments where women can thrive in leadership, business, and community development, stressing that “gender equity is not just about women; it is about building a stronger and fairer Nigeria.”
The event was attended by top government officials, members of the National Assembly, representatives of women’s organizations, and development partners, all of whom lauded the initiative as a landmark in the nation’s efforts to mainstream gender in policy and governance.
With the establishment of the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Gender Centre of Excellence, NIPSS is set to play a leading role in shaping gender-responsive policies and fostering national dialogue on equity, inclusion, and social justice.
