FLOOD ALERT: Communities Along Banks of Rivers Niger and Kaduna Urged to RelocateĀ  NSEMA

Minna, Niger State ,October 3, 2025

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has issued an urgent flood alert to communities located along the banks of Rivers Niger and Kaduna, advising immediate relocation to safer grounds already identified by local authorities.
The warning follows fresh alerts from the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), prompted by the ongoing discharge of large volumes of water from the Kainji, Shiroro, Zungeru, and Jebba hydroelectric dams, all situated within Niger State.

According to a statement by Abdullahi Baba Arah, Director General of NSEMA, the dams are currently releasing thousands of gallons of water per minute, significantly raising water levels in both rivers and posing a high risk of overflow and flooding in surrounding communities.
ā€œWe strongly urge residents in flood-prone areas along the rivers to move immediately to higher ground,ā€ the DG stated. ā€œThe situation is critical, and proactive relocation is necessary to save lives and property.ā€
Communities Urged to Avoid Riverbank Activities
As part of the alert, communities have been advised to avoid farming, fishing, or other activities near the rivers during this period, to prevent being caught in sudden flood surges.
Violent Windstorm Also Expected — NiMet
In addition to the flooding threat, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted that the end of the rainy season will likely be accompanied by violent windstorms, further compounding the risks to life and infrastructure.
Residents are cautioned to:

• Avoid standing under trees during rainfall.
• Stay away from weak or substandard buildings.
• Secure loose materials around homes.

Flood Impact Already Being Felt
Several Local Government Areas upstream and downstream of the dams are already experiencing the destructive impact of flooding. Reports confirm:

• Houses submerged
• Farmlands destroyed
• Bridges and roads washed away
• Displacement of residents
• Disruption of socio-economic activities
• Recorded loss of lives

Many communities have been rendered homeless, with economic livelihoods—particularly agriculture—severely affected.
NSEMA’s Response and Call for Vigilance
NSEMA is working closely with local authorities and emergency services to provide assistance, conduct risk assessments, and prepare temporary shelters for displaced residents. However, the agency emphasized that public compliance with evacuation orders is crucial.
ā€œThis is a time for vigilance and cooperation,ā€ said Abdullahi Baba Arah. ā€œWe cannot stop the flow of water, but we can reduce the human cost through timely action.ā€

Contact and Emergency Support
Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to official government channels, community leaders, and local radio for real-time updates. Those in affected areas should contact emergency lines or report to designated safe locations without delay.
Stay alert. Stay safe. Protect your family.
