Governor Sim Withholds Local Government Allocations in Rivers State

In a surprising turn of events, Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State has ordered the withholding of the monthly statutory allocation to all local government chairmen in the state. This decision has sparked controversy and drawn criticism from local government officials and stakeholders.

The move comes as 21 out of the 23 local government chairmen in Rivers State called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene. They also applauded the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for calling for the impeachment of Governor Sim Fubara.

The local government chairmen allege that Governor Sim has withheld the allocation of funds to the local government areas since April. Additionally, they claim that the governor has refused to convene the Joint Account Allocation Committee Meeting (JAAC), which is essential for the release and disbursement of funds between the state and the local government areas.

In response to the governor’s actions, the 21 local government chairmen have announced that they will not vacate office after their tenure expires in June. They cite a recently amended law that empowers them to stay in office for an additional six months.

According to the chairmen, the amended law stipulates that local government elections should have been concluded, and the winners should be awaiting swearing-in. However, Governor Sim Fubara has allegedly shown no interest in conducting the local government election, prompting the chairmen to assert their rights to remain in office.

The chairmen maintain that the law grants them an additional six months in office after the expiration of their tenure, and they intend to uphold this provision. Their decision to remain in office reflects their commitment to serving their respective local government areas and ensuring continuity in governance amidst the ongoing dispute with the state government.

As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are closely monitoring developments and calling for swift resolution to restore normalcy and ensure the effective functioning of local government administration in Rivers State.
