The House of Representatives Committee on Navy has announced plans to investigate the unlawful detention of Seaman Abbas Haruna, who has been held for nearly six years without trial. The committee has vowed to hold accountable those involved in his prolonged detention, which reportedly occurred under the directive of Brigadier General MS Adamu.

Seaman Abbas Haruna’s plight was brought to light by his wife, Mrs. Hussaina Iliyasu, during a recent appearance on the popular Human Rights Television program Berekete. She recounted that her husband was deployed in 2018 to a joint military operation in Sarti Baruwa, Taraba State, where a disagreement between him and Brigadier General Adamu led to his arrest. Since then, Haruna has allegedly been detained under inhumane conditions without any formal trial, which violates the Armed Forces Act of 2004.
The emotional story shared by Mrs. Iliyasu on Berekete moved the audience and has led to widespread public outcry, with many Nigerians condemning the injustice faced by Seaman Abbas. The House Committee on Navy, led by its Chairman, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, has committed to uncovering the facts behind the incident and ensuring that all military officers involved in the violation of Abbas’ rights are held responsible.
The committee aims to restore trust in the military’s commitment to the rule of law and human rights while working with the military hierarchy to ensure the situation is addressed.
This case marks a significant test for the military’s accountability and the House Committee’s resolve to ensure justice for Seaman Abbas.
