House Probes Excessive Tax Deductions From Civil Servants and Multiple Bank Charges
Abuja, Nigeria — November 1, 2025
The House of Representatives has commenced an investigation into allegations of excessive tax deductions and multiple bank charges affecting civil and public servants across the country.
At the inaugural sitting of the Ad-hoc Committee established to conduct the probe, lawmakers said the move followed a growing number of complaints from workers and ordinary citizens about irregularities in the deductions made from their salaries and in charges imposed by commercial banks.
According to the House, the probe seeks to uncover the root causes of the excessive deductions, identify responsible institutions, and recommend measures to protect citizens from unfair financial practices.
“This investigation has become necessary following the numerous complaints we have received from Nigerians—particularly civil servants—regarding inconsistencies in tax deductions and unexplained bank charges,” a member of the committee stated. “Our duty is to ensure transparency and accountability in all financial dealings affecting the welfare of citizens.”
The committee is expected to summon representatives from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and major commercial banks to provide explanations and relevant records.
Reiterating its commitment to fairness, the House of Representatives assured Nigerians that it will pursue the matter to a logical conclusion to ensure that both government agencies and financial institutions operate in line with principles of justice, equity, and accountability.
The investigation is part of a broader effort by the legislature to strengthen financial oversight and protect citizens from exploitative fiscal and banking practices.
