The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that preparations for the 2027 general elections will continue uninterrupted despite pending court cases involving political parties and other electoral matters.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, stated that the commission remains guided by the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and its operational guidelines, stressing that ongoing litigation will not derail the electoral timetable or preparations for the next general elections.
Speaking on the state of political party affairs ahead of the polls, the INEC chairman urged political parties to address their internal leadership disputes and organizational challenges, describing such crises as unnecessary distractions that could undermine effective political participation and democratic development.
According to him, political parties have a responsibility to maintain internal stability and comply with legal and constitutional provisions governing their operations. He noted that recurring leadership tussles often consume valuable time and resources that could otherwise be devoted to policy development, voter engagement, and strengthening democratic institutions.
The remarks come amid leadership disputes and internal disagreements reported within several political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), among others.
Political analysts have repeatedly warned that prolonged internal conflicts within parties could affect their preparedness for the 2027 elections, particularly in areas such as candidate selection, coalition building, campaign planning, and voter mobilization.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections, emphasizing that the commission will continue implementing activities outlined in the Electoral Act 2026 and its election guidelines regardless of ongoing legal proceedings, except where otherwise directed by competent courts.
The commission also encouraged political stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and lawful mechanisms for resolving disputes, noting that stable political parties are essential to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
With less than two years before Nigerians return to the polls, attention is increasingly shifting toward party realignments, leadership structures, and electoral preparations that will shape the country’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
