INEC CHAIRMAN CHARGES FOSIECON ON CREDIBLE POLLS

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria (FOSIECON) are set to deepen collaboration aimed at promoting credible elections at the Local Government level across the country.
This commitment was reaffirmed during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the (FOSIECON) to the headquarters of the (INEC) in Abuja.
Speaking during the meeting, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, emphasized the critical role State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) play in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic framework. He charged members of FOSIECON to conduct local government elections that inspire public trust and confidence in the electoral process.
Prof. Amupitan noted that credible polls at the grassroots level are fundamental to democratic consolidation, adding that transparency, adherence to due process, and professionalism must remain guiding principles for electoral bodies nationwide.
He further stressed the importance of synergy between INEC and SIECs, especially in areas that directly impact the quality of elections. According to him, sustained cooperation will enhance institutional capacity and improve electoral outcomes across the states.
Key areas of collaboration identified during the meeting include capacity building for electoral officials, the deployment and effective use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in election management, and robust voter education initiatives to increase citizen participation and awareness.
The FOSIECON leadership commended INEC for its continued support and expressed readiness to work closely with the Commission to ensure that local government elections reflect best practices and meet acceptable democratic standards.
The engagement underscores ongoing efforts by electoral stakeholders to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure that elections at all levels remain credible, transparent, and reflective of the will of the people.
