INEC Targets Credible 2027 Polls with Voter Revalidation, Election Timelines
Abuja, February 2026
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced consultative meetings with key electoral stakeholders as part of early preparations for forthcoming elections and the 2027 General Election, reaffirming its commitment to delivering credible, transparent and inclusive polls.
The consultative engagement began on Wednesday with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), whom the commission described as critical partners in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
Speaking at the meeting, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, said 2026 will be a year of intense electoral activities, noting that preparations are already in motion following the successful conduct of the Anambra off-cycle governorship election.
He outlined a packed electoral calendar for the year, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections scheduled for February 21, 2026, as well as bye-elections in Rivers and Kano States to fill vacant legislative seats. According to him, INEC is also preparing for off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States.
Prof. Amupitan announced that INEC will conduct a nationwide voter revalidation exercise ahead of the 2027 General Election to ensure the integrity and accuracy of the voters’ register. He said the exercise is aimed at removing ineligible entries, updating voter information and enhancing public confidence in the electoral process.
The INEC Chairman further assured stakeholders that the 2027 election timetable and schedule of activities would be released in strict compliance with the provisions of the law, allowing political parties, voters and other stakeholders ample time to prepare.
He also called for the speedy amendment of the Electoral Act, stressing that timely legal reforms would strengthen electoral administration, address emerging challenges and further improve the credibility of elections in the country.
INEC reiterated its resolve to sustain engagement with stakeholders, noting that collaboration with civil society and other partners remains vital to achieving free, fair and credible elections in 2027.
