Inibehe Effiong Takes Legal Action Against Erisco Foods and CEO for Defamation
In a significant legal development, Nigerian lawyer Inibehe Effiong has initiated legal action against Chief Eric Umeofia, the President/CEO of Erisco Foods Limited, for alleged defamation. Effiong, who has been practicing law in Nigeria for the past decade, engaged the services of renowned human rights lawyer Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, to lead his legal team in this matter.

The defamation claims stem from statements made by Chief Umeofia during an interview with Television Continental (TVC) on October 2, 2023. Umeofia, while discussing an ongoing case involving Erisco Foods Limited and Mrs. Chioma Okoli, allegedly made damaging and libelous remarks about Effiong. In the interview, Umeofia purportedly accused Effiong of being a “fake lawyer” and referred to him as a “charge and bail lawyer.”

Effiong asserts that Umeofia’s statements have caused him emotional distress, anxiety, and financial losses. He maintains that the claims made against him are false and intended to harm his reputation and legal career.
Effiong, through his legal team led by Falana, SAN, has issued a demand letter to Erisco Foods Limited, demanding a written apology from the company and its CEO, a full retraction of the defamatory statements, and the payment of N100 million in damages. The demand letter stipulates that these actions must be completed within 14 days.
Effiong emphasizes that this legal action is just the beginning, signaling his intention to pursue further legal recourse against Umeofia and Erisco Foods Limited.
The initiation of legal proceedings underscores Effiong’s determination to protect his reputation and hold accountable those responsible for the alleged defamation. As the case unfolds, it will be closely watched by the legal community and the public alike.
