KANO OBSERVES SPECIAL JUMAAT PRAYER IN MEMORY OF LATE NIGERIAN HEAD OF STATE
Kano, Nigeria – February 15, 2026
Fifty years after the assassination of former Nigeria’s Head of State, , family members, associates, and other Nigerians gathered in Kano to observe a special Jumaat prayer in his memory.
The solemn prayer session, held at a central mosque in Kano, drew a cross-section of dignitaries, religious leaders, government officials, and members of the public who came to honour the late leader’s legacy and service to the nation.
Among those in attendance was the Brigade Commander, 3 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ahmad Muhammad Tukur, who joined worshippers in offering prayers for the repose of the late Head of State. The presence of senior military officials underscored the enduring respect the armed forces continue to hold for General Murtala’s leadership and contributions to Nigeria’s development.
The special Jumaat prayer was marked by Quranic recitations and sermons reflecting on the virtues of sacrifice, integrity, and patriotism — qualities many speakers said defined General Murtala’s brief but impactful tenure in office. Clerics urged Nigerians to emulate his commitment to national unity and selfless service.
Family members expressed gratitude for the continued remembrance and solidarity shown by Nigerians five decades after his passing. They described the occasion as not only a time of mourning but also one of reflection on the ideals he stood for.
General Murtala Ramat Muhammad, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1975 until his assassination in 1976, is remembered for initiating significant reforms and advocating for transparency and discipline in public service.
The prayer session concluded with special supplications for peace, unity, and progress in Nigeria, as attendees quietly dispersed, reflecting on the life and legacy of one of the country’s most revered leaders.
