Lagos State Government Issues Contravention Notice to Properties in Jakande Estate for Drainage Violations

In a bid to mitigate the risk of flooding and ensure the free flow of rainwater, the Drainage Enforcement and Compliance Department of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources has taken decisive action against properties built on the Right-Of-Way of drainage channels in Jakande Estate, Oke-Afa, Isolo.

Owners of these properties have been served with a 48-hour contravention notice in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017. The notice serves as a stern warning to property owners to rectify the violation within the stipulated timeframe or face legal consequences.

The enforcement action underscores the renewed commitment of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration to prioritize environmental management and protection across the state. With the onset of the rainy season, ensuring unobstructed drainage channels is crucial in preventing flooding and safeguarding the lives and property of Lagosians.

By issuing contravention notices to properties encroaching upon drainage Right-Of-Ways, the Lagos State Government aims to uphold the integrity of drainage infrastructure and mitigate the risk of flooding-induced disasters. It also underscores the government’s proactive approach to environmental governance and urban planning.

Property owners in Jakande Estate and other affected areas are urged to comply with the contravention notice and take necessary measures to ensure that drainage channels remain unobstructed. Failure to do so may result in legal action and penalties as stipulated by law.

The Lagos State Government remains committed to creating a sustainable and resilient urban environment where residents can thrive without fear of flooding or environmental hazards. Through robust enforcement measures and community engagement, the government seeks to foster a culture of environmental compliance and responsibility among all stakeholders.

As the 48-hour deadline approaches, property owners are encouraged to act swiftly to rectify the violation and contribute to the collective effort to safeguard the environment and enhance the quality of life for all residents of Lagos State.
