List of Nine Senators That Defected to ADC

March 12, 2026, Abuja, Nigeria
Nine senators from different political parties have officially notified the Nigerian Senate of their decision to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The senators cut across three political parties and cited political realignments as the reason for their move to the ADC.
Among those who defected from the Labour Party are Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, and Ireti Kingibe. The trio formally announced their departure from the Labour Party and their decision to join the ADC.
Five other senators also resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ADC. They include Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Binos Yaroe, Lawal Adamu Usman, Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo, and Augustine Akobundu.
In addition, Enyinnaya Abaribe, who was the only senator representing the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the Senate, also announced his defection to the ADC.
However, the Senate has given Senator Abaribe one week to reconsider his defection. Lawmakers stated that his explanation for leaving APGA — claiming he was sacked by the party — does not meet the constitutional requirements for defection, as it is not recognized under the provisions guiding such political moves.
The development highlights ongoing political shifts within Nigeria’s legislative landscape as parties continue to realign ahead of future political contests.
