MARWA TASKS YOUTHS ON SKILLS ACQUISITION AS NGO EMPOWERS 10,000 NIGERIANS

Abuja, Nigeria, February 6, 2026

The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), has urged Nigerian youths to embrace skills acquisition and other empowerment opportunities as a strategic safeguard against substance abuse and other social vices.
Marwa made the call in Abuja during the training and empowerment programme of 10,000 young Nigerians in various practical skills, organised by a non-governmental organisation (NGO). He described the initiative as timely and impactful, noting that empowering youths with employable skills remains one of the most effective ways to curb drug abuse, crime, and social dislocation.

According to the NDLEA chairman, meaningful engagement through skills development not only provides economic opportunities for young people but also gives them purpose, dignity, and a sense of belonging, which are critical in steering them away from drug use and other destructive behaviours.

He expressed satisfaction that the programme aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, particularly in the areas of youth empowerment, skills acquisition, job creation, and social inclusion. Marwa noted that such initiatives complement government efforts and help build a more resilient and productive youth population.

Marwa further stressed that the government alone cannot solve all societal challenges, especially the fight against drug abuse and its associated crimes. He emphasized that combating substance abuse is a collective responsibility that requires the active involvement of individuals, communities, civil society organisations, and the private sector.

He therefore encouraged nation builders, NGOs, and other stakeholders to partner with the NDLEA in designing and implementing programmes that empower youths with practical skills and sustainable livelihoods. Such collaborations, he said, would go a long way in reducing drug demand, strengthening communities, and securing a better future for the nation.

The empowerment programme featured hands-on training in various vocational and entrepreneurial skills, aimed at equipping participants with the tools needed for self-reliance and economic independence.
