Sokoto, Nigeria — In a bold and strategic move to combat the escalating threat of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism in the North West region of Nigeria, the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has directed the Chief of Defence Staff and other senior military leaders to relocate to Sokoto. This directive comes as part of the Federal Government’s focused initiative to restore peace and security in the region.

The relocation will center around the headquarters of the General Officer Commanding (GOC), which oversees military operations in Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi states. The move underscores the government’s commitment to intensifying military operations against criminal elements in these states.
In a statement issued by Dr. Matawalle, the Minister expressed deep concern over the continued activities of terrorists and bandits in the North West, particularly highlighting the recent circulation of videos by bandits showing a Nigerian military armored vehicle stuck in a waterlogged area in Kwashabawa, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. The bandits, after recording the incident, celebrated the setback, further emphasizing the urgent need for a robust military response.
“The Honourable Minister of State for Defence H.E Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle MON has expressed his sadness over the activities of terrorists and bandits terrorizing Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi States and their environs,” the statement read.
Dr. Matawalle announced that a significant military operation will be launched from Sokoto, targeting notorious bandit leader Bello Turji and his gang, with the aim of eliminating their strongholds. He assured that the presence of top military officials in the North West will bolster the morale of the troops and enhance the effectiveness of the operations.
“The Federal Government is deeply concerned about the persistent threat posed by banditry and terrorism in the North West. We are ready to deploy all necessary assets to ensure that these criminal elements are flushed out and peace is restored to our communities,” Matawalle stated. “We must move against these terrorists to enable our people to move freely.”
Matawalle’s directive includes a call for increased vigilance and cooperation from the residents of Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi states. He emphasized that the security and well-being of the people remain the government’s top priority, and reassured the public that no effort will be spared in protecting lives and properties.
The presence of the Minister and the military chiefs in the North West is expected to intensify operations and signal a renewed determination to eradicate the menace of banditry and terrorism from the region.
