Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit: Advancing Universal Energy Access by 2030

The Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit, held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on January 27-28, 2025, convened African leaders, development partners, and private sector stakeholders to advance the ambitious goal of providing electricity access to 300 million people by 2030.

This initiative, launched by the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB), aims to attract at least $90 billion in investments to expand and rehabilitate electricity grids across the continent. Countries such as Nigeria, Senegal, Zambia, and Tanzania have pledged to enhance their utilities, integrate renewable energy, and increase national electricity connection targets. The World Bank plans to contribute $30-40 billion, while the AfDB will provide $10-15 billion, with the remainder sourced from private investors.

The summit also saw the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) pledge up to $6.15 billion to support Africa’s electrification efforts. The IsDB will contribute $2.65 billion in project financing and an additional $2 billion for insuring power projects, while the AIIB will provide $1-1.5 billion in financing.

Several African nations have committed to reforming their electricity sectors by 2030 to connect 300 million people to power. This commitment, part of the “Mission 300” initiative, aims to attract significant investments to expand and rehabilitate electricity grids at minimal cost. Countries such as Nigeria, Senegal, Zambia, and Tanzania are among those that have pledged to enhance their utilities, integrate renewable energy, and increase national electricity connection targets.

The Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit represents a significant step toward achieving universal energy access in Africa, with collaborative efforts from governments, development partners, and the private sector driving the continent’s energy transformation.
