N2.4 Billion Fraud: EX-MD, NEXIM Bank, Robert Orya, Jailed 490 Years

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday, February 5, 2026, secured the conviction of Robert Orya, a former Managing Director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), over a fraud involving approximately ₦2.4 billion.

Orya, who served as Managing Director of NEXIM Bank between 2011 and 2016, was prosecuted by EFCC counsel, Samuel Ugwuegbulam, before Justice F. E. Messiri of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja.

He was found guilty on a 49-count charge bordering on fraud and related financial crimes. Following his conviction, Justice Messiri sentenced Orya to ten years imprisonment on each of the 49 counts, amounting to a cumulative sentence of 490 years.

The court’s verdict marks a significant milestone in the EFCC’s sustained efforts to combat corruption and financial crimes within public institutions, particularly in the banking and financial sector.
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency in the management of public funds, warning that no individual, regardless of status, is above the law.
