NAF Reinforces Air Power Through Advanced Technical Training on AW109 Trekker Helicopter
March 31, 2026, Abuja, Nigeria
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has strengthened its operational readiness following the successful completion of a six-week specialist training programme on the AgustaWestland AW109 Trekker helicopter at the Leonardo Helicopters facility in Italy.
The initiative, carried out under the leadership of the Chief of the Air Staff, Sunday Kelvin Aneke, reflects the Service’s commitment to building a technically proficient and self-reliant force capable of sustaining modern air operations.
The training programme went beyond routine instruction, offering personnel intensive hands-on experience in advanced maintenance procedures, system diagnostics, and the management of critical aircraft subsystems. These competencies are essential for improving aircraft serviceability, reducing mission downtime, and ensuring sustained fleet availability across various operational environments.
Such technical expertise plays a crucial role in modern air operations, particularly in counterinsurgency efforts, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), and rapid mobility missions where quick response and operational efficiency are critical.
Following the completion of the programme, trained personnel have been redeployed to operational units, where their newly acquired skills are expected to immediately enhance fleet performance and mission effectiveness across different theatres of operation.
The development represents a strategic investment in readiness, reliability, and the long-term technical strength of Nigeria’s air power, reinforcing the NAF’s capacity to respond swiftly to emerging threats and ensure the continued protection of the nation’s airspace.
